Isabel Rey adds the role of Liù to her repertoire

During the 2011-12 opera season the artist will sing some classic roles from her repertoire – those of Norina from Donizetti´s Don Pasquale, Micaëla in Carmen and Amalia in Simon Boccanegra and she will also be debuting the role of the slave Liù from the opera Turandot.

Isabel Rey will be speaking at the conference What Voice Unveils: Human Voice Beyond Phonetics which is taking  place at the Menéndez Pelayo University (Santander), and in which the soprano will be collaborating with Dr. Filipa Lá.  Immediately afterwards the Spanish singer will prepare herself for the opening of the 2011-12 opera season, which will take place in her home town of Valencia with a zarzuela gala at the Teatro Principal to open the first Zar Festival to be held there. After that the artist will return to the Zurich Opera House to sing some classic roles from her repertoire – those of Norina from Donizetti´s Don Pasquale, Micaëla in Carmen and Amalia in Simon Boccanegra.  She will also be debuting the role of the slave Liù from the opera Turandot.

Rey affirms that this new role in her repertoire is “one of those characters, like Micaëla in Carmen, who is the dramatic foil to the lead role, or her antagonist.  It is a small role but with extraordinary strength.  Like Micaëla, Liù has exceptional music, which goes with such a marvellous character: faithful, selfless, in love and generous.  I think she is the noblest character I have played until now, the power of her love moves me.  Musically, although it does not have the difficulties of the music of Turandot, it is not an easy part, as it is high and requires flexibility to go from forte to pianissimo”.   The soprano points out that she is “very excited about this debut, as Puccini is one of my favourite composers”.

The soprano will take advantage of the breaks between the productions to continue with her concert activity, such as the recital programmed by the National Centre for Musical Diffusion, within the cycle Primicias at Auditorium 400 at the Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid) in which the singer will be accompanied by a string quartet and will perform pieces by  García Abril, Aribert Reimann and Felix Mendelssohn.
